Q&A: Full Body Walks P1 | Mentor: Steve Cady (Hybride VFX)
Hi everyone, after finishing class 01 I want to introduce you to my new mentor, talk about my expectations for the next term and, of course, show you my progress reel. After 3 months of high-level lectures, Q&As, exercises and eCritiques, I can say I´m ready for this new challenge: go a step further in my animation mentor Journey. Now it is time to learn Body Mechanics.
I. Lecture and Q&A
Full Body Walks P1
Definitely, there were not a better way to start class 02. Full Body Walks, wow, that´s awesome. First let´s talk about the lecture. In the lecture, Dr. Elizabeth Rega, talked about the physiology and anatomy of the walk. It really impressed me. She is a physiologist who worked as animation consultant for many animation studios. She described everything we should know about human physiology to be able to animate believable walks. The second part of the lecture, Luci Napier talked about the full body walk theory and did a demonstration using the Stella rig.
Regarding to the Q&A, it was the first contact with my other classmates. Some of them I already knew, so it wasn’t a problem to introduce myself to the class. It was the first time with Steve Cady too, who is going to be my mentor for the Body Mechanics class. I chose Steve because of his experience with realistic CG animation. I think I´m going to improve my animation skills a lot by learning from the guy who animated movies like Avatar and The Amazing Spiderman. Most of the time, Steve was explaining his workflow and talking about what he wanted from us. In the end of the class, we had the opportunity to introduce ourselves and talk about our background in character animation. Can´t wait until the next Q&A to see Steve doing a demo with Stella.
Progress Reel & Movement Poses
First of all, we had to upload our progress reel for class 01. Just for the mentors to know how advanced we are in animation and if we have a solid understand of the basic foundations. So, here is my rendered progress reel.
Sketches Showing Movement
This time, we were supposed to draw human gestures showing movement. I fell so much comfortable doing sketches right now than when I started class 01. I can really notice the progress I have made. So, here it comes my first sketchbook of the term.
2 Poses Using Stella
The first thing I noticed when I open the Stella character, was the quality of the rig. Differently of Stu, She has a bunch of advanced controls to make our life easier. Now, with Stella, I fell I can create whatever pose I want. Take a look at my final poses.
Yeah, I´m happy with my first eCritique. Steve gave me his feedback about my reel, and I think I should be proud of it. He said it was really fun to watch and that I have potential to excel and grow a lot this term. He liked the poses too. He said my poses do communicate real life gestures and emotions and that they all showed a good line of action and silhouette. He commented I could have pushed the second pose a little bit more to put some tension in there, but that the first pose was beautifully done. I can’t wait to start animating Stella next week.
